AUTUMN DOUBLES 2012
This year the competition attracted 33 pairs from all over the country, with the date a week earlier this year helping to get a settled weekend. Flies, rods and reels all ready, competitors starting to arrive on the island on Friday night and the rest off the first ferry on Saturday morning.
The first day started slow due to a cold north east light breeze, then around 11am rods started to bend along the dam wall, boathouse and reeds, most anglers started with the Loch Fads usual lures - blobs, zonkers, dancers, fabs, cats whiskers and black and green fritz on sinking lines, fast glass and intermediate lines. As the day went on every boat managed to catch. After all catches were weighed, it was off to Rothesay Golf Club for a meal and social evening, and a raffle for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The second day of the competition started with fine mild conditions for fishing, boats were well spread out over the loch and were picking up Rainbows all around the loch, with a 3.30pm finish every fish counts in this competition as one big fish can change the prize list, as you can see from the total returns for weekend .
Then onto the prizes and thanks to the lads and ladies for supporting Loch Fad and the island, also thanks to all who donated raffle prizes, a total of £1030 was raised on the night. Also thanks to George and Corrine and staff for an excellent meal and service. Thanks also to Alan and wee Lewis, Duncan, Johnny, George and Norrie for their help over the weekend, and also Alister and Neil for smoking all the fish on Saturday night.

Angling Club News
The Isle of Bute Angling Association's competition season kicked off on Sunday the 25th of March on Loch Quien in stunning weather for the time of year.
The excellent weather brought a good number of members out, and with a light breeze and some nice fish rising, things were looking good.
The morning was a bit slow with just a few pulls from fish rising to small grey or black buzzers, but in the afternoon the fish started to take a bit better. Neil McKirdy had the best fish of the day with a lovely male brownie weighing 3lb 6ozs which was returned to the water after being weighed and photographed. Johnnie McInairnie was firm favourite to win this competition due to his recent form on the loch with at least eight good fish so far this season, but his luck ran out and he failed to catch.
Some anglers got a bit too comfy in the new chairs in the hut at lunchtime and it was left to one of the most experienced members of the club to show us how to catch fish. Martin Deighan used an Ace of Spades and a Black and Gold Humungus to catch two very fine Brownies for a total of 4lbs 14ozs to win the Smith Trophy.
His best fish weighed 2lbs 13ozs and the rest of us had to make do with catching a bit of the sun!
