2020 Vision – How does Scotland Measure Up to Europe?
The Scottish Government energy policy has the aim of generating all of Scotland’s electricity with renewable energy by 2020. The interim target of renewables generating 31% of Scottish electricity by 2013 was achieved in 2012 with a further interim target of 50% by 2015. Though we may feel more successful than the rest of the UK, there are some bright renewable stars in the rest of Europe. Austria has a huge hydro generating capacity that they supplement with fossil fuels in the winter when the available water is reduced. They also have 1,684Mw of wind generating capacity. Sweden also has a hydro capacity that produces over half of their electricity generation, with an increasing capacity from wind generation providing a further 2.4%.
However outside Europe, Norway has been hitting the 100% renewable bar since 2006!
